Through programming offered for free by the Village Community Boathouse, Hudson River Park offers access for all Park patrons from children to adults to experience this sport.
Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport that fosters teamwork and promotes awareness and stewardship of our estuarine environment.
Village Community Boathouse offers organized team rowing in hand-built boats known as Whitehall gigs. This type of rowboat was historically used throughout the New York Harbor as a stable work boat. Once used to transport people and goods, these gigs are typically rowed by four people guided by a coxswain. The Whitehall boats you’ll see in and around Pier 40 were all built on-site. Free public rowing sessions are offered several times a week from April through October, and all ages and levels of experience are welcome.
